Why Hollywood is global? | Por que Hollywood é global?

The Scene (Brazilian Analysis Centre of Cinema and Audiovisual) translated an interesting article by Janet Wasko, Director of Research in Communication at the University of Oregon (USA).

The author points out cultural and economic reasons for the success of American movies, which control about 75% of the distribution market outside the U.S.. Interestingly, the revenue from ticket represents only 26% of the total achieved by a film. The rest comes from global sales of videos and DVDs.

Among the cultural reasons for this success would be a kind of "narrative transparency" inherent in American films, which would have a" universal appeal", even easier by the widespread use of English worldwide.

Another interesting fact is that American movie audiences goe to the movies a lot, accounting for 44% of box office worldwide. "Actually, the foreign market for Hollywood films is dictated by the release schedules in the U.S.," says the author. Janet Wasko also points out another interesting fact:
Foreign films are curiously absent from American cinema. A frequent explanation is that Americans are not interested in films from other countries. But there is also evidence that foreign films have some difficulty to enter the American movie theaters.

Photographers document the world in a striking exhibition at The Getty museum

The exhibition "Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography since the 60's" at The Getty Center (LA) is simply striking. Makes me wonder what am I doing here. Where's my backpack? I must see this world with my own eyes before I die -- and, of course, do something about it.

It's inexcusable not to visit the exhibition, if you are in LA, and take a peek especially at the Brazilian (yay!) Sebastião Salgado's "Migrations: Humanity in Transition" (2000):

Sebastião Salgado -- Orphanage at a hospital in Kibumba Number One camp (Zaire, 1994)

And at Philip Jones Griffiths' "Vietnam Inc." (1971), a critical account of America's armed intervention in Southeast Asia:

Philip Jones Griffiths -- Vietnam (1967)

And, last but not least, at Mary Ellen Mark's "Life" (1983), about teenagers living on the streets in Seattle:

Mary Ellen Mark  -- "Rat" and Mike with a Gun, Seattle (1983)

Can we get a scholarship for the 1-year Filmmaking course?

Hello, Gabriela.

First, congratulations on the blog. It clarified many doubts about the trip to LA I want to do in March 2011, to spend eight weeks studying Filmmaking. However, I still have a few:

1 - Have you got some kind of scholarship to attend the one year filmmaking? Is it relatively easy to get that or is there too much bureaucracy? How much is the discount?

2 - Considering the price of staying in LA and my goals, is it worth to do the 8 week workshop? Will I have a good sense of lighting, directing, producing, editing? My reel will be relevant enough to help me find employment here?

3 - I saw in the FAQs section on this blog that there are cheaper accommodations and there is a flat next to the school for $ 2,000 and can be shared with others. Could you tell me the name of the flat?

4 - There's also USC. have you heard of it? Good? Bad? People often compare USC with Nyfa? What do they say?

Thank you and sorry if I asked a lot of questions.

I wish you luck and success.

Hi, Bruno:

I'll answer your questions in chapters. Follow the blog! LOL Today is nrs 1 and 3.

To help answering the first one, I have to remind you that Nyfa is located in the country bastion of capitalism in the modern world. The education here is taken seriously -- as a business: you have to make a profit, yes, but providing a service with credibility (and this has a cost!). Nyfa is not a so-called philanthropic institution as many Brazilian private universities call themselves for reasons that will not fit here and with highly questionable results.

The school offers scholarships and financial aid through the U.S. government for Americans. Totally fair.

I should point out that, for all I know, Nyfa has the most competitive prices in the market, considering the cost-effectiveness, and provides quick results. (See an article about it here.)

However, one of the things I most admire in the U.S. is that they truly recognize and reward talent. Nyfa had (or has) a program sponsored by the filmmaker Brett Ratner, providing discounts of up to 40% in the one year course for exceptional students. It was necessary to prove the financial need of the scholarship and demonstrate ones excellence as a student through an essay and have statements from renowned professionals in the student support. I do not know if this program is still in effect.

Anyway, one of the reasons for the school's success is perhaps the great responsiveness to the demands of the students. Nyfa is always investing, improving and growing.

Question nr. 3 is answered in this post, to which I added more information.

Sincerely,

Gabriela

Vc poderia me passar o nome do flat?

4 - Aí em LA também tem a USC. Vc já ouviu falar dela? Bem? Mal?

Oi, Bruno:

Vou responder às suas perguntas por partes. Acompanhe o blog! rsrsrs

Bjs,

Gabriela

Eastwood portrays the beauty of life

I wanna work with Clint Eastwood, even if serving coffee! I must somehow be near him and learn from his incredible directing expertise! LOL I would have a blast, I'm sure

Clint Eastwood's Hereafter considers the idea of an afterlife with tenderness and a gentle tact. The film is quiet, gorgeous and contemplative, unlike his previous recent works -- that have a clean, devastating force, like "Million dollar Baby" and "Grand Torino".

Eastwood focuses more on the "here" than on the "after" to remind us that we must live the lives we know and not count on anything beyond the horizon.

The story is open ended. According to the writer Peter Morgan (The Queen), he didn't want answers, he wanted to ask questions. And it really works!

Hereafter is touching, it’s real, without being cheesy. Only my favorite living director could achieve that so well!

Check a cool review about the film here.
