SHORT FILM SPOKEN IN ENGLISH AND FILMED WITH AMERICAN CREW, HAS A WELL KNOWN BRAZILIAN ACTOR IN THE CAST

On Friday evening, Warner Bros. will screen the short film "Stuffed" by writer and director Gabby Egito. The session will be held in one of the private screening rooms of the studio in Los Angeles and later the film goes to international festivals.

Shot in LA and 20 minutes long, the short tells the story of a private eye (Steve Bartlett) hired by an arrogant advertiser (Phil Miler) to investigate whether his partner is stealing from their ad agency. During the investigation, he discovers that his client is involved with drugs, sexual harassment and white collar corruption. From there, he decides to turn the game, triggering unforeseen consequences.

The film -- entirely spoken in English and shot by an American crew -- is a remake of the noir genre, made famous in the 40 and 50 in Hollywood, favorite film period of the director. It is based on a short story of the award-winning Brazilian writer Marcelo Carneiro da Cunha. Several of his novels had been adapted to the big screen, among them, "Antes que o Mundo Acabe" ("Before the World Ends"), whose feature film was released last year in Brazil.

In addition to American actors, the cast has a Brazilian: Phil Miler, well known in Brazil for playing the character Saint Never on Ford commercials, running for three years on national broadcast. He is also in "O Palhaço" ("The Clown"), directed by Selton Mello, feature to be released in November on Brazilian theaters. "I know Phil's work since Brazil and when I met him here in Los Angeles I decided to invite him for this project, because I knew he's a native English speaker and could add much to the character", says the director.

Living in LA since last year, Gabby also wrote and directed the short "Synergy", screened at major international festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand, and awarded at the Awareness Festival, in Hollywood. She also has two other shorts in post-production, to be released soon.

"I'd love to shoot in Brazil, but as long as the doors are open here, I'm staying. I feel proud to introduce the Brazilian culture in my movies, always giving a universal treatment to the stories, and the reception has been wonderful", she says. She tells her cinematic adventures here at the blog Brazilian Girl in LA (www.brgirlinla.com).

The photography is signed by John Honore, award-nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). He has four features and more than 30 shorts in his resumée, haivng gone to festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand, New York and Canada.

Ela conta suas aventuras cinematográficas aqui no blog Brazilian Girl in LA (www.brgirlinla.com).

My thesis film on post-production | Meu novo curta em pós-produção

We finished the shootings of my thesis film this May 9th. Five intense days. I'll try to find time to tell you all about it here. Seriously, you're not gonna believe what can happen in a shooting. And if can happen, it will, according to Murphy's law.

Well, after the shootings, the Red Camera files were transcoded to Apple ProRes (so they can be edited): aproximately 850 GB of footage. The Nyfa computer ran for five days non-stop to finish the task.

Third step: synchronize image and sound, since we record everything separately for better quality. Honestly, I love editing but sync'ing is a pain in the ass. I just finished it minutes ago, after five days. LOL OMG, this number is chasing me!

Now I'm searching for some musics on the internet just to have something for the editing. Of course, I'm not gonna use them on my final cut, but I need something for the pacing and mood at this point. Then my composer is gonna create a soundtrack specially for the film.

That's a little trick I use: choose a music with the right pace/beat and edit your film based on that. Then replace with original soundtrack and still is gonna be perfectly sync'ed. If you use just your feeling when editing, maybe you'll give your composer a hard time, because music is almost Mathematics, with a precise time signature. The only trouble with this trick is to get so fond of the music you're using on your draft that you cannot see your film with another version anymore. LOL

So let me go, time is flying. I have to have a rough cut next Friday 27th). Wish me luck!

Synergy invited to Italian film festival | Meu curta convidado pra festival italiano

Casacalenda looks like a fairy tale village, doesn't it?

My short film Synergy was invited to the 9th edition of the Italian film festival MoliseCinema, held from August 2nd to 7th in Casacalenda. They saw my film at Clermont-Ferrand and are interested on screening it. Yay!

According to the organization, MoliseCinema aims to promote the latest and most innovative works of the italian and international cinema, encouraging young authors and new ways of expression. They claim the right to enjoy cinema at the small italian towns, "a right stifled for decades by the cultural domination of television and by the distribution policies which favour large urban areas and multi-screen cinemas", they state.

So far, Synergy won the 2011 Merit Award from the Awareness Film & Arts Festival (Los Angeles); went to the 26th Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Market (France); and was screened at the 4th Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival last month.

Fifth project: what's missing? | Quinto projeto: o que é que tá faltando?

(leia versão em português abaixo)

This is my fifth project, the chekhovian. Everybody's got the same dialogue (ramdomly elaborated on class) and we were supposed to create a scene to give a meaning to it. The most important was the subtext not the lines themselves. Check the dialogue:

A - It looks like rain.
B - The grass is always greener.
A - What's the first sentence?
B - Oh, my God, what the fuck.
A - Life is always unexpected.
B - You don't say?
A - Let's eat some tacos.
B - Hun?
A - I can't understand you.
B - Are you that dumb?

As usual, my sweet teacher didn't say anything nice about it. He told me I didn't get it. Period. What the heck did I miss? In fact, I don't know how he could've said that if he didn't even watch the whole film because he has ketchup phobia and there's kind of a disgusting scene with it.

I cannot say I'm completely happy with the result though. It started weird from the senseless dialogue. It's hard to make sense of that. And I've had 5 hours to shoot everything. Didn't got all the coverage I wanted.

Plus, as I told you in another post, I've had problems with my crew during the shootings. My footage was crap. I did color correction as much as I could. But the framing still sucks, I know! I'm not gonna give more excuses. A director is always somehow responsable for the final product. So, that's it. What else can I say? I just have to thank the awsome actors that helped me on this.

---

A - Qual é a primeira frase?
B - Oh, meu Deus, que porra.
A - A vida é sempre inesperada.
B - Não me diga?
A - Vamos comer uns tacos.
B - Hum?
A - Eu não consigo te entender.
B - Você é tão estúpido(a) assim?

As imagens ficaram bem ruinzinhas.

Finally, I finished shooting my final project. Oh, my Gosh, it's been wild these days. Starting with the script. Last week, I didn't have a story. Then I remember an idea for a scene that I've had last year for a screenplay contest. The scene happened on an elevator.

So I started to search for an elevator with detachable walls, for shootings. Nothing. Only insanely expensive places, that asked me like a US$ 5.000 deposit, for example. I realized that it would be impossible to get it in such a short time. Plus, I've read the script in class and the teacher -- that sweetest one -- told me: "It has no story". Huge crisis during all the week: "Am I ever gonna be good? on this". And trying to come up with another story.

After all the effort, my colleagues told me that they thought the first idea was better than the other ones. So back to zero. I adapted the story to a conference room instead of an elevator.

At the same time, I posted adds at LA Casting and Now Casting -- sites where we can find actors -- for an audition.

Next step was to find a location to shoot. School was a possibility but I would have to get all the furniture. Too much of a hassle. Then, searching on Craig's List, I found a perfect (and expensive) place. I got a discount for students. They were really nice.

So that's it. Shootings were fast. Faster than I could ever imagine. But this can be a problem too. I certainly forgot to do stuff. Let's check on the editing room.

---

Course motto: move your butt! | Lema do curso: se vira!

(leia versão em português abaixo)

I was talking to a friend that follows my blog yesterday and he was suprised with this revelation: school only provides us the equipment. We have to do everything else by ourselves. Well, I thought it was that was perfectly clear, isn't it? The motto is "move your butt!".

So when you watch the movies I did it means really that I did everything. Not only get a script out of my head and go to the set to direct it. We have to find the actors, the locations, provide transportation and food, get costumes and props, manage the budget. My crew is me and two classmates.

And, after shooting, I have to edit it myself on Final Cut. There's no editor to do that for us.

That said, I'm dealing with my final project this week. I wanted to get more people to help, but Gosh it's hard to find them. Even to hire.

So I'm struggling with my script, have casting auditions on Wednesday and I'm shooting on Saturday -- with or without additional crew. Oh, my God, I 'm trying not to crack. Moreover, I have to join another project from Wednesday to Friday, full time.

---

Fifth project shooted, thanks God! | Terminadas as filmagens do quinto projeto, graças a Deus!

(leia versão em português abaixo)

I've never thought I'd say this but I'm thankfull that my chekhovian project is almost done. It's exhausting to shoot so many things in such a short time. And I think it's planned by the school in advance to be this way. They want us to feel tired, under pressure and all. I feel like I'm in that movie G. I. Jane (with Demi Moore, do you remember?). They want us to quit, to give up. But I won't. As days go by, I realize this is what I wanna do for the rest of my life. I'm improving, I love creating stories, I love making them come true.

For this project, luckly, I've got two amazing professional actors and I hope I won't screw up the whole thing. I have to have the coverage for all the scenes, please! Shootings yesterday were very stressfull. And at a certain point, because of the problems I've had with one of my crew's member, I kind of lost my concentration on thinking of the best shots. I shouldn't, but I couldn't avoid it. I'm not perfect - yet. Now I think I'm beggining to understand what a director does.

Now I have to concentrate all my efforts on the final project. I'm shooting from 19th to 21st this month. It's next week. I'm gonna have a nervous breakdown. Breath, breath! And I don't have a story yet. Well, maybe. It's simple but not easy. And I need perfect acting and perfect directing in order to succeed.

But first things first. Today I have to edit my fifth project, the chekhovian.

PS: I'm smoking three times much. Inevitable.

---

Tou me sentindo naquele filme G.I.

Respira, respira! E eu não tenho uma história ainda! Bem, talvez eu tenha. É simples, mas não é fácil. E eu preciso de direção e atuações perfeitas pra ficar bom sucesso. Não serve o mais ou menos.

Mas uma coisa de cada vez. Hoje eu tenho que editar meu quinto projeto.

PS: Tou fumando três vezes mais. Inevitável.

Fourth project: I guess I'm getting there | Quarto projeto: acho que tou chegando lá

(leia versão em português abaixo)

This is my fourth project, the music video. The goal was to explore the relationship between sound and film, using narrative tools like montage and jump cuts. We were encouraged to explore a more personal form of visual storytelling.

I used my cousin's song (he has a band with a recently released CD) and I tried to be inspired by the music, not by the lyrics. Only some lines - as "What’s the color of our love? | And if black or white it’ll be" - influenced my story. I wanted to be something very romantic. But yet funny. And in some moments the story works in concert with the music, as you can check.

By the way, it was insane to shoot everything in only 5 hours. We had to move really fast. Plus, I've had to face a huge problem. I've imagined a bigger story and when we started to shoot at Exposition Park Rose Garden (Los Angeles) I realized that we wouldn't be able to do it in such a short time. So I've cutted and changed the story while shooting. (I don't know what can be more insane than that: you have to block the actors, set the camera and create the story as you go!) I was terrified that it wouldn't work.

My sweet teacher liked it! (of course he complained about some coverage that's missing) And my coleagues liked it too! Some of them told me it was the best work of class combining story and music. Well, all I can say is it's not even close to perfection, but I'm really proud of this son.

Apenas algumas frases - tipo "Qual é a cor do nosso amor? | E se preto e branco for" - influenciaram a minha história.

What's this dialogue about? | Sobre o quê é esse diálogo?

(leia versão em português abaixo)

My next film sounds really fun. It's the chekhovian project (like in Chekhov, the writer). Everybody's got the same dialogue (ramdomly elaborated on class) and we're supposed to create a scene to give a meaning to it. What's most important is the subtext not the lines themselves. Here it is:

A - It looks like rain.
B - The grass is always greener.
A - What's the first sentence?
B - Oh, my God, what the fuck.
A - Life is always unexpected.
B - You don't say?
A - Let's eat some tacos.
B - Hun?
A - I can't understand you.
B - Are you that dumb?

We have to shoot it on the next weekend. This means to have the story, the location and the actors by the end of this week.

---

A - Qual é a primeira frase?
B - Oh, meu Deus, que porra.
A - A vida é sempre inesperada.
B - Não me diga?
A - Vamos comer uns tacos.
B - Hum?
A - Eu não consigo te entender.
B - Você é tão estúpido(a) assim?

Second project: getting better, smile! | Segundo projeto: melhorando!

(leia versão em português abaixo)

This is my second project at New York Film Academy. We were challenged to make a film that maintained continuity in story, time, and space. The action had to unfold utilizing a variety of shots (10-15) in a continuous sequence (no perceptible jumps in time or action). It was essential that the audience believed in the reality of the scene. Remember, no dialogues, it's a silent movie. I used three rolls of 16 mm black and white (80 ASA) and we shooted the whole project in 5 hours. I tried to use music and sound effects as well.

My teacher didn’t like it. He said it’s cheesy and also criticized some shots that have problems with the eye line. Ok. But I’m very proud of myself because I feel I’m improving. When my coleagues tried to describe my story (it’s an exercise that we do on class), they used the exact same words I used to tell it to my actors before the shootings. So I guess I’m showing better the images. Of course there are problems, I’m still learning!

PS: I showed my film to other teachers and people at school and they told me it’s one of the best films that they’ve ever seen at Nyfa – considering that’s only my second project. "It has beggining, middle and end! And makes sense!", they said.

E faz sentido!", eles disseram.
