Canon 5D, the still camera that provides a film look. Below, mounted with extra devices to shoot HD videos on 24 frames per second |
1) Price: Panasonic costs $ 5000 and the Canons are between $ 1,500 and $ 2,000 (body without the lens). Still on money: one 32GB P2 Card for Panasonic costs about $ 500. You need at least two for one day of shooting (You can't stop the shooting to unload everything on the computer because it takes too long). Canon works with SD cards, and a 32GB card costs an average of $ 50. A brutal difference.
3) Depth of field: They both can achieve the effect of having the picture focused in the foreground and blured background, like in movies (shalow depth of field). But, to achieve this with the Panasonic, you need a much greater distance between the object filmed and the lens. That is, your locations have to be spacious to put the camera well away from the object in order to zoom in and achieve the desired effect. The native Canon camera lens is 35mm and you can use 50mm, 100mm, etc. So they easilly provide a shallow depth of field. You don't need too much space and distance. On the other hand, you must take special care with the focus. That is, if the actor is moving too much during a close-up, he may go out of focus.
Finally, remember that prices are always just the really really basic equipment. We must invest in all the accessories and extra devices to have a great quality.
Honestly, if you do not want to be a cinematographer or have a production company with frequent gigs, the best is to rent from someone that has a cool equipment and makes a buddy price for your project.

Panasonic AG-HVX200, a traditional all-in-one to shoot HD video on 24fps |
