How can I become a screenwriter?

Atenciosamente,

Queli

I've read some of your experiences on the blog. I must say that I became a fan. You know, I would love to have opportunities and follow my dream of becoming a screenwriter. Despite my age, I have no training, because of some difficulties I had to leave college. I've been writing some stories and, with your experience, I wonder if you can tell me how I can become a writer. I don't want to spend another eight years studying something. I would work in the area if only to take meals ... LOL and study at the same time ...

Sincerely,

Queli

Oi, Queli!

Hi, Queli!

Thank you for following the blog. I was very happy with your words.

About the hints on how to become a screenwriter, there's no magic formula, the recipe is just study and write very much. Talent is only 5% of that formula.

It's not necessary to go to college, but the study is crucial. You gotta read many books, technical books. I advise you to start with a simpler one like Syd Field's. He is controversial, many people in Brazil don't like him, but I think necessary.

Moreover, you should watch many movies. But it only becomes productive when you really understand what you have to notice at the story. Otherwise, you just watch it as a common spectator.

Anyway, it is a process that takes years of study, understanding and maturity. That's why I decided to study in LA. I've done many courses in the Brazil and felt it was time to go one step further.

About the age, I guess there's no problem. The best writers are over 40, 50. But not only because they are mature. It's because they've been already studying and experimenting for a long time.

So, you're on track, you're already writing. But do not count only on inspiration. Being a writer is much more perspiration. Gotta rewrite the script 200 times till you get it really good. And gotta have too much technique for it. Besides much love for the profession, of course. Go ahead!

Best wishes,

Gabriela
